Circumnavigation of d'Urville Island. Saturday morning saw an early start of 6am with nine intrepid North Islanders taking a closer look at d'Urville Island. The trip followed the story of Angelina and traced the early exploration and Maori occupation of the Island. Morning tea was spent in the Mill Arm where everyone saw many small stingray swimming through the water. A large pod of dusky Dolphins welcomed the 'Spirit of d'Urville' into the current basin and French Pass drawing the trip to a close at 12noon, just before the wind started. McNaught comet continues to be seen. The clear nights are still enjoyed with sights of the comet in the skies above French Pass. Stoat Eradication. A trust has been formed to eradicate stoats from d'Urville island. It is hoped that landowners will participate eradicating their own land thus forming a grid covering the Island. The aim is to bring back the birdlife which has been devastated by introduced pests. What Lies beneath. Danny and son Jason took advantage of low tides and good dive planning to film one of the holes in the French Pass. The first time this area has been filmed that we know of. 20 plus meters revealed sponges and bryozoan along with many fish species, some very large. A large Goatfish was splendid in a vivid pink. All nature of starfish including what appeared to be alien invaders hiding under a bed of large mussels were seen. An octopus, butterfly perch and large moki made their presence known. If you want to know where that bait goes while fishing try asking the hundreds of spotty. Video will be shown on U Tube after it has been analysed. |
