Brown Booby: Six sightings of a Brown Booby from November shows we have definatly got an overstayer. The DOC Marine Science team photographed the bird sitting with some King Shag. Seems to be quite at home.

Large pod of Dusky dolphins sighted

A large pod of Dusky dolphins have been sighted over several days in the current basin and have moved north. Several juveniles were in the pod.
Several pods of Bottlenose dolphin have also been sighted.

Circumnavigation of d'Urville Island.
Saturday morning saw an early start of 6am with nine intrepid North Islanders taking a closer look at d'Urville Island. The trip followed the story of Angelina and traced the early exploration and Maori occupation of the Island. Morning tea was spent in the Mill Arm where everyone saw many small stingray swimming through the water. A large pod of dusky Dolphins welcomed the 'Spirit of d'Urville' into the current basin and French Pass drawing the trip to a close at 12noon, just before the wind started.

McNaught comet and and other happenings this week

The McNaught comet has been getting brighter over the week with the tail getting a lot longer. With no city lights the French Pass Peninsular is an ideal viewing platform. Sixteen guests and locals joined us the other night again toasting the comet with a nice local Red. The photos turned out well, two making the local papers. The comet should be visible for another couple of weeks. 'It looks like a pinhole in the sky with a ray of light shining through.'

This week saw the 6th sighting of a Brown Booby. Arctic Skua are common perusing the White Fronted Tern for a free lunch. Regular sightings of Fluttering and Flesh-footed shearwater, little Blue penguin and other seabirds.
