A Humpback whale and calf were sighted in the MarlboroughSounds with a playful pod of Dusky Dolphins. Humpbacks are seen passing throughthe Cook straight on their migration to warmer waters for calving.

Maari Wellhead Platform

April saw the float off of the Maari wellhead platform fromthe vessel Blue Marlin in Admiralty Bay. Blue Marlin is the largest carrier inthe world. Due to the deep water and sheltered location, Admiralty Bay is thepreferred site for float offs. The wellhead has been towed to the Maari Field off Taranaki

Seasonal changes.

Bottlenose dolphin have been regular visitors to FrenchPass. I am always amazed at how intuitive they are when it comes to weather. They head south through French Pass just before a SE change. A couple of weeksago I followed a pod into Admiralty Bay. Mum dad and the calves swept the bayfeeding on red cod.  What a sight.

Common dolphin have also been active feeding on bait ballsin the area. Dusky dolphin are starting to transit the Pass in pods of around50 with calves. They will be arriving in a month or two in small pods to winterover.

Seal pups have hauled out on nearby haul out sites away fromthe main breeding colonies. They are wonderfully playful in the clear waters ofd’Urville Island.

Broadband.

We thought it would never come but French Pass now hasbroadband. You can now get broadband on wireless when you log on at FrenchPass. The new service is available from all units. www.gohotspot.co.nz

We are now open for the coming season. We have had a good start with the BBC doing some successful filming and over 200 day visitors from Nelson over a two week period. Our clients enjoyed a light lunch and wildlife discovery tour of the French Pass. Feedback was tremendous with many voicing it as there best trip. With the change of season we will now be looking forward to visits from Orca. Over 200 Orca forage around our coastline. We look forward to sharing French Pass with you when you visit.
